Sydney Restaurants
There are so many excellent Sydney
restaurants; you'll have difficulty making a selection. It
all depends on what your tastes are in food, and how fat your
wallet is.
You will discover Sydney restaurants serving every kind
of cuisine imaginable. There are Sydney restaurants in the
European tradition: French, German, Swiss, Italian and Spanish
cuisine.
If you enjoy seafood, then you'll love the Sydney restaurants
which specialize in fish and seafood dishes, such as the famous
Doyles Seafood Restaurants. They have no less than three
restaurants at Watsons Bay, a few minutes drive east of Sydney
by bus or taxi. Plus there's another Doyles Restaurant at
Circular Quay, plus a Bistro at the popular Sydney Fish
Markets, Ph 61 2 9552-4339.
There are a multitude of great Asian cooking traditions
available to you in countless Sydney restaurants, including
Indian, Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, Chinese, Mongolian and so
on. China alone is such a big country with so many different
cultures that it has thousands of different dishes,
literally.
Some of the Spanish restaurants in Sydney have a floor show
complete with Flamenco Dancers. Check the Spanish Club at 88
Liverpool St, between the cinema strip and the Chinatown area
(Ph 9267-8630). And in nearby Glebe, the Spanish Tapas
restaurant at 28 Glebe Point Rd, has whirling Spanish dancers
as well. Check with them on 9571-9005 for the times of the
dancers.
The best place for Sydney restaurants serving Chinese food is
the Chinatown district... namely Dixon Street, Sussex Street
and George Streets between Haymarket and Liverpool Streets.
It's a huge area, and well worth exploring on foot during the
day.
Then don't forget the food styles from Africa and the Middle
East. There are several Sydney restaurants serving Lebanese and
Turkish food to be found in places such as King Street,
Newtown, and Cleveland and Elizabeth Streets (on the border of
Surry Hills and Redfern). However, it is not a good area to be
in at night.
At the low end of the scale, you'll find numerous cafes and
takeaway food places which sell hamburgers, fish and chips, hot
meat pies, chicken and beef kebabs, falafel and pide (Turkish
bread).
There are Kosher Sydney restaurants in the eastern suburbs to
cater to Sydney's large Jewish community. These include:
Beaches Kosher Restaurant, in Hall St, Bondi, Ph 61 2
9365-5544.
Lewis' Continental Kitchen, 2 Curlewis St, Bondi, Ph 61 2
9365-5421.
Pita Mix, Shop 5, 809-823 New South Head Rd, Rose Bay. Ph 61 2
9388-1424.
Vegetarians and Vegans will enjoy the Green Gourmet Restaurant
at 115 King St, Newtown, which has all kinds of Chinese
vegetarian dishes, including many made with mock meats. Their
mock chicken, mock duck, mock pork or beef are actually
textured vegetable protein (TVP) which looks pretty much like
the real thing, and tastes enjoyable even to hard-core meat
eaters as well.
Some of the middle eastern Sydney restaurants even have
upstairs rooms with cushions all over the floor, and belly
dancers to entertain you as you eat your meal.
These are just a tiny sample of what's available on the Sydney
Restaurants scene. So be adventurous. Go and enjoy some of
these, whatever your tastes and budget, and then hunt out some
other Sydney eateries on your own!
