Australia WeatherAustralia weather is generally
mild along the east coast of the continent. And Sydney is
particularly pleasant, with only a few very hot or moderately
cold days each year.
Here is a link to the official government
Australia Weather Bureau link for the
state of New South Wales. Once there you can click thru
for Sydney weather.
The climate in Sydney very rarely goes above 90 degrees
Fahrenheit (32 Celsius) in summer, and in winter our Australia
weather hardly ever drops below 58 degrees Fahrenheit (15
degrees Celsius).
The Australia weather gets much harsher and dryer as you travel
inland, but even in the height of winter, the thermometer very
rarely drops below freezing in most areas. (The summer heat can
be bad, though, with 104 F, 40C or higher possible much of the
time.) Snow is only seen in the mountain resorts, or in
Tasmania (which is our coldest and most southern state).
Many people in New South Wales never bother to have air
conditioning installed in their homes, because our Australia
weather is so pleasant here. They might need to use an electric
fan, however, for a few hot nights around December or January
(which is our summer in the southern hemisphere).
Queensland (to the north of New South Wales) has hotter
Australia weather, especially north of the Qld. state's
capital, Brisbane.
Cairns further north in Queensland which has very hot and
tropical Australia weather. And the steamiest rainforest
jungle-like area is in Cape York, the spiky tip at the
north-east point of the Australian continent.
At the top of the centre part of Australia lies the area called
the Northern Territory (it's not a state, as such). Its
capital city is Darwin, which has very hot and dry Australia
weather... This is real Outback Australia, as is the so-called
Red Centre, home of Ayers Rock (called
Ularu by the native Aboriginal people).
Victoria (the state to the south of NSW) and its state
capital, Melbourne, has cooler Australia weather and tends to
be wetter than Sydney - though Melbournites swear that's a lie.
Tasmania, the Apple Isle (known as 'Tassie' to
all Aussies) has the coldest and wettest Australian weather. It
is a large island off the coast of Victoria, and is reached by
air or by car ferry. The two main cities in Tasmania are
Launceston in its north, and Hobart to the south. Tasmania has
a wonderful National Park area called Cradle Mountain. The
Australia weather there can be really cold and challenging.
South Australia lies west of Victoria and its capital is
Adelaide, known as the City of Churches... And keep
driving for a few thousand Kms more and you'll cross the vast
Nullarbor Plain and reach West Australia and the
capital city of Perth. By the way, the word Nullarbor
isn't Aboriginal, like many people think... It's actually
Latin, and it means "No Trees".
Perth is closer to Asia than it is to Sydney, so flights there
from the east coast (Sydney or Melbourne) are not cheap. An
international flight from Sydney to New Zealand can be cheaper
than a domestic flight from Sydney to Perth!
